I have had candidates lose job opportunities, simply by not sending an email thank you note after an interview, wearing inappropriate interview dress, skirts too short, pants too long, a poorly fitted toupee, too strong a cologne, dirty or torn shirts, broken eyeglasses.

The lists today are the truth, the whole Truth.

Bad breathUnfortunately a serious mouth exhaling problem (halitosis), dirty teeth, missing or broken teeth, nose and ear hair problems, dirty or bitten nails, shaving problems, and beard, mustache, and under arm-hair (for women) can be an interview killer.

The hiring process is not Now, never was, and never will be a game.

Your first impression lasts for a long time, maybe even forever. It could cost you as badly as a lack of preparedness for the interview conversations, discussions, missing knowledge about the interviewer, company, products, competitors, and constant turnover amongst the employees.

If you do not plan how you will manage the names, pronunciations, and titles of the interviewer, they will never forget your perceived rudeness during your time with them. Pronouns matter in Interviews.

Nervousness is almost always ignored but never mentioned. Most hiring authorities are likely to remember their first interviews.

The interviewers are always concerned with how you will present yourself as a representative of their company, products, and themselves.

Keep in mind, that the Risk of Hire is always greater than the Reward of Hire.

Interview practice
Be prepared. Spend the time. Reduce your risk of failure for both you and the hiring authority. Always rehearse your interviews with a mirror, qualified friends, audio recordings, and video playbacks. Also, use this practice time to review personal talking points for use during your discussion time with the interviewer (career, family, friends, connections, etc). This extra step in showing interest will likely not be forgotten.

Have someone else interview you, wear your interview clothing, review your questions, compensation expectations, and how you will answer especially puzzling questions. Always be able to discuss competitors, the company’s place in the market, products, and the company’s financial growth. Make sure to be able to discuss what new products, processes, and goals do they have for the future.

What you must remember is that this is a process, not a series of isolated events.
